Today was an amazing day! Hector "Our Protector" introduced us to his island and projects. We learned that many of the children in his community were not getting an education before he started his school. Travel is by dugout canoe in the Amazon, which can be very dangerous for small children. We also learned about his conservation projects. He rescues endangered monkeys from the black market, etc., introduces them on the island, and has a breeding project. Eventually he'll begin reintroducing his monkeys on the mainland where they can repopulate.
We also got to meet 3 old Lifeworks students from two summers ago. They are in college now and decided to come back on their own to help Hector again. Pretty cool to meet Lifeworks alumni.
After the introduction to the island, we began work on the day's project. We built the wall around the school's kitchen, which was damaged by a recent wind storm. We also built paths around the school grounds so the children won't have to walk around in the mud as much. All in all it was an amazing and very rewarding day!
